One of our most favourite things, here at The Library of Fragrance, is receiving suggestions from our customers about new scents that they would like to see introduced to our 'library'. And, when we received an email from Catherine Talbot, aged just 14, asking us to bottle the scent of new tennis balls, we just couldn't ignore it! Skip forward four months and New Balls launched as a limited edition from our website in time for Wimbledon season! We were delighted to be able to fulfil Catherine's request and even more delighted when she offered to write a blog post for us about why she loves that particular, distinctive smell so much...
One of my favourite smells is the smell of new tennis balls. The hiss of scent which hits you when you open a new tin is just so refreshing and always reminds me of summer. I love the freshness mingled with the slight synthetic smell from the rubber. I usually love clear, fresh scents but even though this is artificial it still smells really clean to me.
In fact, I love the scent so much that back in February I emailed the Library of Fragrance suggesting the smell of new tennis balls might be a idea for them to try. I had looked at their website and thought anyone who was crazy enough to make a Play-Doh scent might give it a second thought. I got the most lovely reply from Clare saying she loved the smell as well, and how sports shops smelled just like that too. She said perhaps they could do a special edition to coincide with Wimbledon one year - I never in my wildest dreams thought anything would come of it - I thought she was just being polite.
Then just a few weeks ago, imagine my surprise, when through the post came three beautiful bottles of limited edition perfume which captured the essence of Wimbledon, including my very own suggestion - New Balls! I love the smell of it and can’t believe how clever they have been to capture that fresh yet rubbery smell - I never thought something so unique could be put in a bottle. My favourite out of the other two scents which accompany it is Grass Court, because it reminds me of summer grass on a hot day, while the strawberries and cream is very sweet - perhaps best for layering so it is not too overpowering. Overall I can’t believe they have captured the essence of Wimbledon in such a unique way, and how amazing it is that they responded to my crazy idea in the first place!
Thanks so much, Catherine! We hope you all loved reading this as much as we did!
