As you may gather, the wonders of our sense of smell never fail to amaze us here at The Library of Fragrance. We're often contacted by customers who are pregnant or are new mothers, who have fallen out of love with their usual scents and as well as helping them to try some new scents that might fit the bill, we're also keen to assure them that they are not alone!
Scientists actually believe that pregnant women and new mothers have a heightened sense of smell, because this helps to protect against eating bad foods and also assists with sensing environmental changes/dangers. And there are many other studies to suggest that scent is an important element of the bonding process that takes place between mother and child, which would further explain why this sense becomes more sensitive at this time. Whatever the cause, however, it is clear that the changes that come with pregnancy often alter perceptions of taste and smell. Some studies even suggest that it's an expectant mother's heightened sense of smell that could be the cause of morning sickness. One study suggests that pregnant women with the condition anosmia (not being able to smell), are not affected by morning sickness at all!
It's no wonder, then, that this fascinating subject has formed the basis of this month's Mother & Baby fragrance feature, and we were delighted that our 'Fresh Laundry' Cologne made it into the piece as a recommended scent for sensitive noses to sniff out. 'Fresh Laundry' captures the scent of freshly laundered, warm towels, straight out of the tumble dryer. It's comforting, subtle, soothing and lasts for hours, yet it doesn't clamour for attention and it's easy on the nose. Pregnant, expectant, or not - we love it.
